Effect of Agricultural Information Centres on Farmers’ Access to Technical Information

Abstract

Agricultural information centres are important sources of technical knowledge and advisory support for farmers. They provide opportunities for farmers to obtain information on crop production, livestock management, farm inputs, pest and disease control, soil management, agricultural marketing, and other farming activities. By bringing agricultural information closer to farming communities, these centres can improve the accessibility and availability of relevant technical information needed for effective farm decision-making and production. This study will examine the effect of agricultural information centres on farmers’ access to technical information. The study will assess farmers’ awareness and utilisation of agricultural information centres, determine their level of access to technical agricultural information, and examine the influence of information centre services on farmers’ access to relevant and timely information. It will also identify challenges that may limit farmers’ use of agricultural information centres. The study will focus on the availability and accessibility of technical information through agricultural information centres, including information on improved production practices, farm inputs, soil fertility management, pest and disease control, climate and weather information, livestock management, agricultural marketing, post-harvest handling, and farm technologies. It will also examine the frequency of farmers’ visits, types of information obtained, timeliness of information, clarity of information, availability of extension personnel, communication materials, and opportunities for follow-up support. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on awareness, utilisation, accessibility, and experiences with agricultural information centres. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural information centre services and farmers’ access to technical information. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who regularly utilise agricultural information centres may have better access to technical agricultural information than farmers with limited access to such centres. The centres may improve the availability of relevant information and provide farmers with opportunities to obtain timely technical advice and clarification on farming challenges. However, distance, limited operating hours, inadequate information materials, shortage of extension personnel, poor communication facilities, and low farmer awareness may constrain effective utilisation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural information service providers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ associations, government institutions, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving agricultural information centres and strengthening their role in making technical agricultural information more accessible to rural farming communities. The study concludes that agricultural information centres can contribute to improving farmers’ access to relevant technical agricultural information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural development authorities strengthen information centres through adequate staffing, updated information materials, improved communication facilities, convenient operating schedules, and regular dissemination of current agricultural information. Greater awareness should also be created among farmers regarding the services available through agricultural information centres to promote effective utilisation.
