Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Ability to Identify Agricultural Market Risks
Abstract
Agricultural market risks are uncertainties that can affect farmers’ ability to sell their produce at favourable prices and obtain expected returns from agricultural activities. These risks may arise from price fluctuations, changes in consumer demand, market competition, changing input and transportation costs, seasonal supply variations, and limited access to reliable market information. Farmers’ ability to identify market risks is therefore important for making informed production, marketing, and selling decisions. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant market information and practical knowledge for recognising and responding to potential market risks. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ ability to identify agricultural market risks. It will assess the extent to which extension education improves farmers’ understanding and recognition of different forms of market risk. The study will also examine the contribution of extension training, market advisory services, demonstrations, information dissemination, and extension contact to farmers’ ability to identify risks associated with agricultural marketing. The study will focus on extension education, farmers’ knowledge of agricultural market risks, price fluctuations, market demand changes, competition, seasonal price variations, market information, transportation costs, input price changes, supply conditions, buyer requirements, produce marketing decisions, and risk identification practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of agricultural market information and identify areas where inadequate knowledge may limit their ability to recognise potential market risks. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of agricultural market risks, sources of market information, and ability to identify different market risks. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ ability to identify agricultural market risks. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ ability to identify agricultural market risks. Farmers who receive regular extension information and market-oriented advisory services may demonstrate greater ability to recognise price instability, changes in market demand, seasonal market conditions, competition, transportation-related risks, and other factors that may affect agricultural marketing outcomes. The level of risk identification may also vary according to farmers’ access to market information, extension contact, farming experience, and participation in organised agricultural activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural cooperatives, commodity marketers, agribusiness organisations, government agricultural agencies, development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that incorporate agricultural market risk education and market information services. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical advisory programmes that improve farmers’ capacity to recognise market uncertainties and make informed marketing decisions. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improved identification of agricultural market risks by increasing farmers’ knowledge of market conditions, uncertainties, and factors that influence agricultural marketing outcomes. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen market-oriented education, timely dissemination of market information, and practical training on agricultural market risk identification. Farmers should also be encouraged to make effective use of available market information and advisory services when planning production and marketing activities.
