Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Clean Seed Production Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of clean seed production practices. The production and use of clean seed are important for maintaining healthy planting materials, reducing the spread of seed-borne and other production-related problems, and supporting successful crop establishment. Appropriate clean seed production practices can help farmers maintain seed quality through careful selection, handling, processing, and storage. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and practical skills needed to understand and apply recommended clean seed production practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education on clean seed production and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended practices. It will also identify the major clean seed production practices used by farmers and determine the types of information provided through extension education programmes. The study will consider practices such as selection of healthy parent plants, use of suitable planting materials, field inspection, removal of undesirable plants, proper harvesting, cleaning, sorting, and appropriate handling of seed materials. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise crop farmers involved in seed production in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of clean seed production practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to extension education on clean seed production and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the clean seed production practices commonly adopted by farmers and the major challenges encountered during seed selection, field management, harvesting, and processing. The findings may further indicate areas where additional extension education and practical demonstrations are required to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and application of clean seed production practices. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, seed development agencies, policymakers, seed producers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension education in promoting clean seed production. The findings may assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes and demonstrations on seed selection, field inspection, crop management, harvesting, cleaning, and handling. Improved adoption of clean seed production practices may contribute to better planting material quality, improved crop establishment, and reduced production losses. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of extension education to farmers’ adoption of appropriate clean seed production practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular extension training, practical field demonstrations, farm visits, and improved access to reliable technical information on clean seed production. These measures may strengthen farmers’ capacity to produce quality planting materials and support sustainable crop production.
