Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Customer Relationship Practices in Agribusiness
Abstract
The study examines the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of customer relationship practices in agribusiness. Customer relationship practices involve activities through which farmers establish, maintain, and strengthen relationships with customers through effective communication, customer service, feedback collection, complaint handling, and responsiveness to customer needs. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical guidance on managing customer relationships and improving interactions with buyers. Examining the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of customer relationship practices is therefore important for strengthening agribusiness management and market participation. The study will determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of customer relationship practices in agribusiness. It will specifically assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and the extent to which they adopt practices such as communicating regularly with customers, identifying customer needs, responding to enquiries, handling customer complaints, collecting customer feedback, maintaining customer records, providing accurate product information, and maintaining long-term relationships with customers. The study will also examine the contribution of extension education to farmers’ understanding and application of effective customer relationship practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education and their adoption of customer relationship practices in agribusiness. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of customer relationship practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education contributes positively to farmers’ adoption of customer relationship practices. Farmers who receive relevant extension education are expected to demonstrate greater use of effective customer communication, feedback collection, complaint handling, customer record keeping, and other relationship-building practices. The study may also reveal variations in adoption based on farmers’ exposure to extension education, frequency of extension contact, and access to agribusiness information and support. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, agribusiness stakeholders, and other institutions involved in improving farmers’ enterprise development. The findings are expected to demonstrate the importance of extension education in developing farmers’ knowledge and practical skills for managing customer relationships. The study will also provide information that can support the design of extension programmes that incorporate customer service, communication, feedback management, and relationship-building practices. The study will conclude that extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and skills for adopting effective customer relationship practices in agribusiness. It will recommend strengthening extension education on customer relationship management, providing practical training on customer communication and complaint handling, encouraging farmers to maintain customer records, and promoting the use of appropriate communication channels for maintaining customer contact. Improved extension education is expected to enhance farmers’ ability to maintain productive customer relationships and support sustainable agribusiness development.
