Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Ecological Farm Management Practices

Abstract

Ecological farm management practices involve agricultural methods that promote the sustainable use of natural resources while maintaining farm productivity and protecting the surrounding environment. These practices may include soil conservation, crop diversification, habitat management, organic matter improvement, efficient water use, biodiversity conservation, and reduced dependence on environmentally harmful inputs. Extension education provides farmers with knowledge, skills, and practical information that can influence their understanding and adoption of environmentally sustainable farming practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of ecological farm management practices. It will assess the extent to which farmers’ exposure to extension education influences their knowledge, attitudes, and application of recommended ecological management practices. The study will also examine the role of extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services in encouraging farmers to incorporate ecological approaches into their farm management activities. The study will focus on extension education, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, ecological farm management, soil conservation, crop diversification, biodiversity management, organic matter management, water conservation, habitat protection, sustainable land use, and environmentally responsible farming. Attention will be given to farmers’ adoption of practices that support soil health, conserve natural resources, maintain beneficial organisms, reduce environmental degradation, and sustain agricultural productivity over time. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of ecological farm management, and level of adoption of recommended practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of ecological farm management practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater exposure to relevant extension education may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of ecological farm management practices. Extension training, demonstrations, and advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of soil conservation, biodiversity management, water conservation, crop diversification, and other ecological practices. However, adoption may vary according to farmers’ access to resources, labour availability, farm size, availability of technical support, and perceptions of the benefits of ecological farming. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote sustainable and environmentally responsible agricultural production. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical educational programmes, demonstrations, and advisory strategies that address farmers’ knowledge gaps and encourage wider adoption of ecological farm management practices. The study concludes that extension education can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of ecological farm management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, demonstrations, field visits, and advisory services on ecological farming methods. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable practices that improve soil health, conserve water and biodiversity, reduce environmental degradation, and support sustainable agricultural productivity.
