Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Waste Disposal Planning

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm waste disposal planning, focusing on how agricultural extension education influences farmers’ ability to plan and implement appropriate methods for managing and disposing of waste generated from farming activities. Effective waste disposal planning is important for reducing environmental pollution, maintaining farm sanitation, protecting soil and water resources, and promoting sustainable agricultural production. However, farmers’ adoption of proper waste disposal planning may be influenced by their knowledge, access to information, and exposure to agricultural extension education. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine their level of adoption of farm waste disposal planning practices. It will examine extension education activities such as farmer training, farm visits, group meetings, practical demonstrations, workshops, and advisory services. The study will also assess farmers’ planning practices concerning waste identification, segregation, collection, temporary storage, transportation, treatment, reuse, recycling, and final disposal. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education and their adoption of farm waste disposal planning practices. The data collected will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm waste disposal planning. The study is expected to find that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension education demonstrate greater awareness and adoption of appropriate farm waste disposal planning practices. Extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge of waste classification, appropriate disposal methods, environmental risks, and the importance of planning waste management activities. Practical demonstrations and advisory support may further improve farmers’ ability to organize waste collection, storage, treatment, reuse, recycling, and disposal activities. However, inadequate extension contact, limited waste management facilities, lack of technical information, and financial constraints may affect adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, environmental agencies, policymakers, development organizations, and farmers’ groups on the importance of extension education in promoting effective farm waste disposal planning. Strengthening extension programmes through practical demonstrations, regular farm visits, farmer training, and accessible waste management information may encourage farmers to adopt more organized and environmentally responsible waste disposal practices. The study will conclude that effective extension education can contribute to increased adoption of farm waste disposal planning by improving farmers’ knowledge, skills, and awareness of appropriate waste management procedures. It will recommend regular and practical extension education, improved access to waste management facilities, increased farmer training on waste disposal planning, and stronger collaboration among extension personnel, farmers, and environmental stakeholders to promote cleaner farms and sustainable agricultural production.
