Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Soil Mapping Practices
Abstract
Soil mapping practices are important tools for identifying and understanding the spatial distribution of soil characteristics across agricultural fields. Proper soil mapping can provide farmers with useful information about variations in soil type, texture, fertility, drainage, and other properties that influence crop production and soil management. Extension education can improve farmers’ awareness and understanding of soil mapping practices by providing relevant information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance. The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of soil mapping practices. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension education on soil mapping, determine the extent of educational support received, examine farmers’ level of adoption of soil mapping practices, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption of these practices. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension education and the adoption of soil mapping practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of soil mapping practices. The study is expected to find that extension education has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of soil mapping practices. Farmers who receive regular educational information, practical demonstrations, technical guidance, and follow-up support are expected to demonstrate greater awareness and application of soil mapping practices. However, limited access to mapping technologies, inadequate technical knowledge, high costs of mapping equipment, insufficient extension contact, and limited training opportunities may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, soil management specialists, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, and farmers’ organizations. Improved extension education may strengthen farmers’ capacity to understand and utilize soil maps for making informed decisions concerning crop selection, fertilizer application, land management, and other agricultural activities. The study will conclude that effective extension education is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of soil mapping practices. It will recommend increased extension visits, practical mapping demonstrations, farmer training, improved access to appropriate mapping technologies, and continuous technical support to enhance farmers’ capacity to use soil mapping information for improved agricultural production and sustainable soil management.
