Abstract
The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of storage rack management practices. Proper storage rack management is important for organizing agricultural produce, improving ventilation, reducing contact with floors and walls, facilitating inspection, and protecting stored produce from damage and contamination. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to manage storage racks appropriately and improve post-harvest handling. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as proper arrangement of produce on storage racks, appropriate spacing between stored items, safe stacking on racks, regular cleaning of rack surfaces, inspection of stored produce, prevention of overcrowding, maintenance of adequate ventilation, and safe movement around storage racks. It will also consider the proper use and maintenance of storage racks to support efficient storage operations and preservation of produce quality. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers involved in the storage of agricultural produce in the selected study area. A suitable sampling procedure will be used to select respondents, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension education and farmers’ adoption of storage rack management practices. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension education will contribute to farmers’ adoption of appropriate storage rack management practices. It is also expected to show improvements in areas such as rack cleaning, produce arrangement, spacing, ventilation, inspection, safe stacking, and routine maintenance among farmers who receive relevant extension information and practical guidance. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders involved in post-harvest management. The study will provide information that can guide the development of practical extension programmes, demonstrations, and advisory activities aimed at improving farmers’ storage rack management practices and reducing avoidable post-harvest losses. The study will conclude that extension education can play an important role in promoting appropriate storage rack management practices among farmers. It will recommend that agricultural extension services should strengthen practical training, demonstrations, farm visits, and technical advisory support on proper rack arrangement, cleaning, maintenance, spacing, ventilation, and inspection to improve the quality and safety of stored agricultural produce.
