Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Sustainable Farm Input Use

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of sustainable farm input use, focusing on how agricultural extension education influences farmers’ decisions to use farm inputs efficiently, safely, and in ways that support long-term agricultural productivity. Sustainable use of farm inputs such as fertilizers, improved seeds, pesticides, herbicides, and organic materials is essential for maintaining soil productivity, reducing input wastage, protecting the environment, and improving farm returns. However, inadequate knowledge and limited access to reliable technical information may affect farmers’ ability to adopt recommended input-use practices. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine their level of adoption of sustainable farm input-use practices. It will examine extension education activities such as farmer training, field demonstrations, farm visits, group meetings, advisory services, and distribution of agricultural information. The study will also assess farmers’ adoption of practices relating to appropriate input selection, recommended application rates, correct timing, safe handling and storage, efficient application, and proper management of farm inputs. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education and their adoption of sustainable farm input-use practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of sustainable farm input use. The study is expected to find that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension education demonstrate greater adoption of sustainable farm input-use practices. Extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge of appropriate input selection, dosage, timing, application methods, safety measures, and efficient resource utilization. Practical demonstrations and direct interaction with extension personnel may further improve farmers’ confidence in applying recommended practices. However, constraints such as high input costs, limited availability of quality inputs, inadequate extension contact, and insufficient training opportunities may affect adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, development agencies, and farmers’ organizations on the importance of strengthening extension education for sustainable farm input management. Improved training programmes, practical demonstrations, regular farm visits, and timely technical advice may help farmers make better decisions concerning the selection and application of agricultural inputs. The study will conclude that effective extension education can contribute to increased adoption of sustainable farm input-use practices by improving farmers’ knowledge, skills, and awareness of appropriate input management. It will recommend increased access to regular and practical extension education, improved availability of reliable agricultural information, and stronger collaboration between extension personnel and farmers to promote efficient, safe, and sustainable use of farm inputs.
