Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Participation in Community Agricultural Monitoring

Abstract

Community agricultural monitoring is an important approach for collecting, observing, and sharing information on agricultural activities, production conditions, farm challenges, and changes within rural communities. It can support timely identification of agricultural problems and improve communication between farmers, extension personnel, community organizations, and other agricultural stakeholders. However, effective participation in community agricultural monitoring requires farmers to possess adequate knowledge, awareness, and practical skills. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and guidance needed to participate effectively in monitoring activities. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ participation in community agricultural monitoring. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of community agricultural monitoring activities, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their participation. It will also assess the forms of monitoring activities in which farmers participate and the level of information provided through extension education programmes. The study will focus on extension education, farmers’ participation, community agricultural monitoring, farmer knowledge, extension contact, agricultural information collection, farm condition monitoring, agricultural problem identification, reporting of farm challenges, community information sharing, monitoring activities, and participation in agricultural development programmes. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired encourages participation in community agricultural monitoring activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field assessment methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ participation in community agricultural monitoring. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge, awareness, and participation in community agricultural monitoring activities. Farmers who receive regular extension education and practical guidance may demonstrate greater participation in identifying agricultural challenges, collecting relevant farm information, reporting emerging problems, and sharing agricultural information within their communities. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical training contribute to improved participation in community-based agricultural monitoring. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, community-based organizations, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that encourage farmers to participate in community agricultural information collection and monitoring activities. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing participatory programmes that improve communication between farmers and agricultural service providers. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of knowledge and support for improving farmers’ participation in community agricultural monitoring. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, practical demonstrations, community meetings, and follow-up advisory activities that promote participation in agricultural monitoring. Extension programmes should also encourage farmers to identify, document, and communicate relevant agricultural conditions and challenges within their communities.
