Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Wind Monitoring
Abstract
The study examines the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of agricultural wind monitoring. Wind conditions are important environmental factors that can influence crop growth, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, pesticide application, crop lodging, and other agricultural activities. Access to appropriate information and guidance through extension services can help farmers understand wind conditions and incorporate wind monitoring into their farm management practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services relating to agricultural wind information and determine the extent to which extension personnel educate farmers on wind speed, wind direction, and the effects of wind conditions on crop production activities. It will also examine the level of farmers’ adoption of agricultural wind monitoring and identify the ways in which farmers use wind information in making farm management decisions. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of agricultural wind monitoring. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have regular access to extension services are more likely to understand and adopt wind monitoring practices. Extension personnel are expected to improve farmers’ awareness of wind speed, wind direction, and the implications of changing wind conditions for crop production. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to weather monitoring tools, insufficient technical knowledge, and poor availability of agricultural weather information may constrain adoption. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension services in promoting farmers’ use of wind-related information. The study may also support the development of extension programmes that provide farmers with practical knowledge and appropriate tools for monitoring wind conditions during agricultural activities. The study will conclude that effective extension services can contribute to improved adoption of agricultural wind monitoring among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension education on agricultural weather monitoring, improving farmers’ access to simple wind-monitoring technologies, and promoting timely dissemination of understandable wind information to support informed farm management decisions.
