Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Agritourism Marketing Practices
Abstract
Agritourism provides farmers with opportunities to combine agricultural production with tourism activities such as farm visits, recreational experiences, educational tours, farm product sales, and cultural activities. Effective marketing is important for attracting visitors, promoting farm-based products and experiences, and generating additional income from agritourism enterprises. Extension services can support farmers by providing information, training, demonstrations, and advisory guidance on appropriate marketing practices for developing and promoting agritourism activities. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of agritourism marketing practices. It will assess the extent to which extension services influence farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended marketing practices for agritourism enterprises. The study will also examine the contribution of extension training, advisory visits, demonstrations, market information, and information dissemination to farmers’ adoption of agritourism marketing practices. The study will focus on extension services, agritourism marketing, farmers’ knowledge, promotional activities, direct marketing, social media promotion, online marketing, farm signage, customer communication, visitor engagement, farmer cooperatives, tourism networks, farm product marketing, agritourism services, and adoption of agritourism marketing practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of marketing information and identify challenges that may limit their adoption of appropriate marketing strategies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services, knowledge of agritourism marketing practices, and level of adoption. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of agritourism marketing practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of agritourism marketing practices. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical training, demonstrations, and marketing advisory support may demonstrate greater use of direct marketing, social media promotion, online platforms, farm signage, customer communication, and collaboration with tourism organisations. Adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, digital resources, tourism networks, marketing facilities, and experience in agritourism activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, tourism operators, farmer cooperatives, government agricultural and tourism agencies, development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that support agritourism development and marketing. The findings may also assist stakeholders in designing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ ability to promote farm-based tourism products, attract visitors, and develop sustainable agritourism enterprises. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to improved adoption of agritourism marketing practices by increasing farmers’ knowledge, marketing skills, and access to relevant information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies collaborate with tourism organisations to provide regular training, demonstrations, market information, and advisory services on agritourism marketing. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable traditional and digital marketing practices to improve visitor engagement, increase market reach, and enhance the income-generating potential of agritourism activities.
