Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Digital Receipts for Farm Transactions
Abstract
The study examines the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of digital receipts for farm transactions. Digital receipts provide electronic records of payments and transactions involving the purchase and sale of agricultural inputs, farm produce, equipment, and other agricultural services. Their use can improve transaction documentation, reduce reliance on paper records, and provide farmers with accessible evidence of financial transactions. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services relating to digital financial recordkeeping and determine the extent to which extension personnel educate farmers on the use, storage, and management of digital receipts. It will also examine the level of farmers’ adoption of digital receipts for farm transactions and identify the major ways farmers use electronic transaction records in their agricultural activities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of digital receipts for farm transactions. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular extension services are more likely to adopt digital receipts for recording farm transactions. Extension services are expected to improve farmers’ awareness of the importance of electronic transaction records and their ability to use digital tools for documenting payments and purchases. However, limited digital literacy, inadequate access to smartphones and internet services, concerns about digital security, and limited knowledge of electronic payment systems may constrain adoption. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, financial service providers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension services in promoting digital transaction recordkeeping among farmers. The findings may also support the development of extension programmes that improve farmers’ digital financial management skills and encourage better documentation of agricultural transactions. The study will conclude that effective extension services can contribute to improved adoption of digital receipts for farm transactions among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension education on digital financial recordkeeping, improving farmers’ digital literacy, promoting access to appropriate digital tools, and providing practical guidance on the secure storage and use of electronic transaction records.
