Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Institutional Market Linkages

Abstract

Institutional market linkages involve establishing and maintaining connections between farmers and organised buyers such as schools, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, food processors, supermarkets, government institutions, and other large-scale purchasers of agricultural produce. These linkages can provide farmers with more organised marketing opportunities, access to reliable buyers, and information about product quality and supply requirements. Agricultural extension services can support farmers by providing market information, facilitating contacts with institutional buyers, and offering guidance on production and marketing requirements. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of institutional market linkages. It will assess how access to extension services influences farmers’ ability and willingness to establish relationships with institutional buyers of agricultural produce. The study will also determine the extent to which farmers adopt institutional market linkage practices and identify the forms of extension support that contribute to their participation in organised markets. The study will focus on extension services, institutional buyers, market information, buyer identification, contractual arrangements, product quality requirements, supply consistency, collective marketing, pricing information, market negotiations, customer relationships, and institutional market participation. It will also examine farmers’ access to extension advice concerning institutional market requirements and the extent to which such information supports their ability to meet the demands of organised agricultural markets. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to extension services and adoption of institutional market linkage practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of institutional market linkages. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of institutional market linkages. Farmers who receive relevant extension information and market advisory support may demonstrate greater participation in organised markets and stronger connections with institutional buyers. The findings may also indicate that extension assistance improves farmers’ understanding of quality standards, supply requirements, pricing arrangements, delivery schedules, and other conditions associated with institutional markets. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, institutional buyers, agricultural cooperatives, agribusiness organisations, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote organised market participation and improve connections between farmers and institutional buyers. The findings may also assist farmers in expanding their customer base, improving market access, developing reliable supply relationships, and increasing opportunities for sustainable agricultural sales. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to improving farmers’ adoption of institutional market linkages and strengthening their participation in organised agricultural markets. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide farmers with practical information on identifying institutional buyers, meeting product quality requirements, negotiating supply arrangements, maintaining consistent supply, and managing buyer relationships. Extension agents should also facilitate linkages between farmer groups and potential institutional buyers to improve market access and support sustainable farm enterprises.
