Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Pollinator-Friendly Farm Practices

Abstract

Pollinator-friendly farm practices involve agricultural management methods that protect and support bees, butterflies, and other pollinating organisms that contribute to the reproduction and productivity of many crops. Practices such as maintaining flowering plants, conserving natural vegetation, reducing unnecessary pesticide use, and providing suitable habitats for pollinators can contribute to improved pollination and sustainable agricultural production. Extension services provide farmers with technical information, practical guidance, and demonstrations that may influence their knowledge and adoption of practices that support pollinator conservation. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of pollinator-friendly farm practices. It will assess the extent to which farmers’ access to extension services influences their knowledge and application of practices that support pollinators within agricultural landscapes. The study will also examine the contribution of extension contact, training, demonstrations, and advisory services to farmers’ adoption of recommended pollinator-friendly practices. The study will focus on extension services, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, pollinator-friendly farming, pollinator conservation, flowering plants, natural vegetation, habitat management, pesticide management, biodiversity conservation, crop pollination, field margins, and sustainable agricultural production. Attention will be given to farmers’ understanding and application of practices such as maintaining flowering resources, protecting natural habitats, managing field margins, and using pest control methods that minimize harmful effects on pollinating organisms. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services, knowledge of pollinator-friendly practices, and level of adoption. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of pollinator-friendly farm practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater access to relevant extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of pollinator-friendly farm practices. Extension training, demonstrations, and advisory visits may improve farmers’ understanding of the importance of pollinators, habitat conservation, flowering plants, and appropriate pesticide management. However, adoption may vary according to farmers’ access to planting materials, labour, farm size, pest management needs, availability of extension support, and perceptions of the benefits of pollinator conservation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, crop production specialists, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote pollinator conservation and sustainable agricultural production. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical training and demonstration programmes that encourage farmers to integrate pollinator-friendly practices into their regular farm management activities. The study concludes that extension services can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of pollinator-friendly farm practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, field demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on pollinator conservation, habitat management, flowering plant establishment, and responsible pesticide use. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable practices that protect pollinators, improve crop pollination, conserve biodiversity, and support sustainable agricultural productivity.
