Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Reusable Agricultural Materials

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of reusable agricultural materials, focusing on how agricultural extension support influences farmers’ use of materials that can be reused for productive purposes. The reuse of suitable agricultural materials can help reduce farm waste, conserve resources, lower production costs, and promote sustainable agricultural production. However, farmers’ adoption of reusable materials may depend on their access to relevant information, technical guidance, demonstrations, and advisory services provided by agricultural extension personnel. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ access to extension services and determine their level of adoption of reusable agricultural materials. It will examine extension activities such as farm visits, training programmes, field demonstrations, group meetings, and advisory communication. The study will also assess the types of reusable materials adopted by farmers, including crop residues, animal waste, organic materials, suitable farm containers, packaging materials, and other agricultural by-products that can be safely reused for farming purposes. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to extension services and their adoption of reusable agricultural materials. The data collected will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of reusable agricultural materials. The study is expected to find that farmers who have regular access to extension services demonstrate greater awareness and adoption of reusable agricultural materials. Extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge of the identification, preparation, safe handling, and appropriate application of reusable materials. Practical demonstrations and direct advisory support may further increase farmers’ confidence in incorporating material reuse into their farming activities. However, inadequate extension contact, limited technical information, lack of suitable equipment, and insufficient knowledge of safe reuse methods may constrain adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension officers, policymakers, development agencies, and farmers’ organizations on the importance of extension services in promoting the productive reuse of agricultural materials. Strengthening extension delivery through regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and timely technical advice may encourage farmers to make more effective use of available agricultural materials. The study will conclude that effective extension services can contribute to increased adoption of reusable agricultural materials by improving farmers’ knowledge, skills, and access to technical support. It will recommend increased extension contact, practical training on appropriate material reuse, demonstration of locally suitable techniques, and stronger collaboration between extension personnel and farmers to promote resource conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable agricultural production.
