Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Seed Quality Monitoring

Abstract

Seed quality monitoring involves the systematic assessment and maintenance of seed quality to ensure that planting materials have suitable germination capacity, purity, viability, moisture content, and physical condition. High-quality seeds are important for successful crop establishment, uniform plant growth, and improved agricultural productivity. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with the information, training, and technical guidance required to identify quality seeds and adopt appropriate procedures for monitoring and maintaining seed quality. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of seed quality monitoring. It will assess farmers’ access to extension services relating to seed quality, determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended seed quality monitoring practices, and examine how extension education, advisory visits, demonstrations, and technical information influence farmers’ seed quality monitoring activities. The study will focus on extension contact, extension education, advisory services, seed inspection, germination testing, seed purity assessment, moisture monitoring, seed viability assessment, seed certification, seed storage conditions, and identification of damaged or contaminated seeds. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of practices for checking seed labels, packaging, quality indicators, and seed conditions before planting and during storage. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires to assess their access to extension services and adoption of seed quality monitoring practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of seed quality monitoring practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of seed quality monitoring practices. Farmers with greater access to relevant extension information and technical support may demonstrate higher adoption of practices such as seed inspection, germination testing, moisture monitoring, purity assessment, proper storage, and verification of seed certification information. The study may also identify specific seed quality monitoring practices where farmers require additional extension support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, seed companies, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote proper seed quality monitoring among farmers. The findings may also help farmers reduce the use of poor-quality planting materials, improve crop establishment, minimize seed-related losses, and support better farm productivity. The study concludes that extension services can provide important knowledge and technical support for improving farmers’ adoption of seed quality monitoring practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on seed inspection, germination testing, seed purity, moisture monitoring, seed certification, storage conditions, and other appropriate seed quality monitoring procedures to strengthen farmers’ capacity to maintain quality planting materials.
