Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Documentation of Indigenous Farm Innovations

Abstract

Indigenous farm innovations represent locally developed knowledge, practices, techniques, and solutions that farmers create or adapt to address challenges in agricultural production. These innovations may contribute to improved resource use, productivity, environmental management, and adaptation to local farming conditions. However, many indigenous innovations may remain undocumented, limiting opportunities for their preservation, evaluation, dissemination, and wider application. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information and technical support for properly recording and documenting useful indigenous innovations. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ documentation of indigenous farm innovations. It will assess the extent to which farmers receive extension support relating to the identification, recording, and preservation of indigenous agricultural innovations and determine how such services influence their documentation practices. The study will also examine the types of extension services provided to farmers and the extent to which farmers apply these services in documenting their locally developed innovations. The study will focus on extension services such as advisory visits, innovation-related training, farmer meetings, documentation guidance, practical demonstrations, participatory learning, and information dissemination. Farmers’ documentation of indigenous innovations will be assessed based on their ability to identify useful innovations, record their development processes, describe their applications, preserve related knowledge, and share documented information with other farmers or agricultural stakeholders. Documentation methods such as written records, photographs, videos, mobile applications, and farmer registers will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and relevant documentation records where available. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ access to extension services and their documentation practices. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ documentation of indigenous farm innovations. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ documentation of indigenous farm innovations. Farmers who receive regular advisory support, training, and practical guidance may be more likely to document their indigenous innovations than farmers with limited extension contact. The study may also reveal that extension support can improve farmers’ ability to organize, preserve, describe, and communicate information about locally developed agricultural practices and technologies. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, research institutions, agricultural development agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote the preservation and documentation of indigenous agricultural knowledge. The findings may also assist researchers and extension organizations in identifying useful farmer innovations that can be studied, improved, shared, and incorporated into appropriate agricultural development programmes. The study concludes that extension services are important in encouraging farmers to document indigenous farm innovations and preserving valuable local agricultural knowledge for future use. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide practical training and guidance on simple documentation methods, including written records, photographs, videos, and digital tools. Extension programmes should also encourage collaboration between farmers, researchers, and extension agents to ensure that useful indigenous innovations are properly documented, preserved, and disseminated.
