Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Participation in Agricultural Knowledge-Sharing Events

Abstract

Agricultural knowledge-sharing events provide important opportunities for farmers to exchange information, experiences, innovations, and practical solutions relating to agricultural production and rural development. Such events may include farmer meetings, field days, agricultural exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, farmers’ forums, and other interactive learning activities. Participation in these events can improve farmers’ access to useful agricultural information and strengthen their ability to learn from extension agents and fellow farmers. Extension services can play an important role in creating awareness of these events and encouraging farmers’ participation. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ participation in agricultural knowledge-sharing events. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their level of awareness of knowledge-sharing events, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their participation. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact, types of extension services received, and farmers’ involvement in different agricultural knowledge-sharing activities. The study will focus on extension services, farmers’ participation, agricultural knowledge-sharing events, extension contact, farmer meetings, field days, agricultural exhibitions, workshops, demonstration activities, farmers’ forums, information exchange, peer learning, agricultural innovation sharing, and access to agricultural information. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and their participation in agricultural knowledge-sharing events. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field assessment methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ participation in agricultural knowledge-sharing events. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may positively influence farmers’ participation in agricultural knowledge-sharing events. Farmers who have regular contact with extension agents and receive information about meetings, demonstrations, exhibitions, workshops, and other learning activities may demonstrate greater participation. The study may also indicate that timely communication, practical advisory support, and encouragement from extension personnel contribute to farmers’ willingness to participate in knowledge-sharing activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for improving the organization and promotion of agricultural knowledge-sharing events. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing participatory programmes that encourage farmers to exchange experiences, discuss production challenges, and share locally developed agricultural innovations. The study concludes that extension services are an important means of encouraging farmers’ participation in agricultural knowledge-sharing events and improving access to agricultural information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer mobilization, timely event communication, practical demonstrations, farmer forums, and follow-up activities. Extension programmes should create more opportunities for farmers to interact with extension personnel and other farmers in order to promote effective agricultural knowledge exchange and continuous learning.
