Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Participation in Community Agricultural Resource Management

Abstract

Community agricultural resource management is an important approach to promoting the sustainable use and management of resources such as farmland, water sources, grazing areas, communal equipment, forests, and other agricultural assets. Effective participation of farmers in the management of these resources can contribute to improved resource utilization, reduced conflicts, environmental conservation, and sustainable agricultural development. However, farmers may face challenges related to inadequate information, limited technical knowledge, weak coordination, and insufficient participation in community resource management activities. Extension services can provide farmers with relevant information, technical guidance, and participatory support to improve their involvement in community agricultural resource management. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ participation in community agricultural resource management. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their level of participation in community resource management activities, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their participation. It will also assess the types of extension services available to farmers and the community agricultural resources commonly managed through collective participation. The study will focus on extension services, farmers’ participation, community agricultural resource management, extension contact, technical advisory services, farmer education, participatory decision-making, communal farmland management, water resource management, agricultural equipment management, grazing resource management, resource conservation, community planning, and collective agricultural activities. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and their level of participation in community-based agricultural resource management activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ participation in community agricultural resource management. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve farmers’ participation in community agricultural resource management activities. Farmers who have regular access to extension agents, community meetings, practical training, and advisory services may demonstrate greater participation in collective planning, resource conservation, decision-making, maintenance of shared agricultural facilities, and management of communal resources. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and participatory extension approaches contribute to improved farmer involvement in community resource management activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, community-based organizations, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote collective resource management and sustainable agricultural development. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing participatory activities that encourage farmers to contribute to community decisions and improve the management of shared agricultural resources. The study concludes that extension services are an important source of information, technical guidance, and participatory support for improving farmers’ involvement in community agricultural resource management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen community-based training, farmer meetings, participatory planning, advisory visits, and resource management demonstrations. Extension programmes should encourage collective decision-making and promote practical approaches to the sustainable management of shared agricultural resources.
