Effect of Extension Services on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Fodder Conservation Techniques

Abstract

Fodder conservation is an important livestock management practice that enables farmers to preserve feed resources for use during periods of pasture scarcity, dry seasons, and other periods when fresh forage may be limited. Techniques such as hay making, silage production, forage drying, proper storage, and crop residue preservation can help improve the availability and quality of livestock feed. However, livestock farmers may face challenges in adopting appropriate fodder conservation techniques due to inadequate technical knowledge, limited access to extension information, and insufficient practical training. Extension services can provide farmers with the knowledge and advisory support required to improve fodder conservation practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on livestock farmers’ adoption of fodder conservation techniques. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended fodder conservation techniques, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of appropriate conservation practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to livestock farmers on fodder conservation. The study will focus on extension services, fodder conservation, livestock farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, forage harvesting, hay making, silage production, forage drying, crop residue conservation, feed storage, moisture management, feed quality preservation, storage hygiene, and adoption of recommended fodder conservation techniques. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in their livestock enterprises. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of fodder conservation techniques. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve livestock farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended fodder conservation techniques. Farmers who have regular access to extension agents, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory information may demonstrate greater adoption of hay making, silage production, forage drying, crop residue preservation, and appropriate feed storage practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely technical guidance contribute to better preservation of feed resources and improved availability of livestock feed. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving livestock feed management and reducing feed shortages. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in harvesting, conserving, storing, and maintaining the quality of fodder. The study concludes that extension services are an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving livestock farmers’ adoption of fodder conservation techniques. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services on fodder conservation. Extension programmes should emphasize appropriate hay making, silage production, forage drying, crop residue preservation, storage management, and feed quality maintenance to support sustainable livestock production.
