Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Agribusiness Continuity Planning

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness continuity planning. Agribusiness continuity planning involves preparing agricultural enterprises to maintain essential operations during disruptions such as production challenges, market changes, financial difficulties, labour shortages, and other unexpected events. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to plan for potential disruptions and maintain the stability of their agricultural businesses. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension training on agribusiness continuity planning and determine the extent to which extension personnel provide training on risk identification, resource management, financial preparedness, recordkeeping, alternative production arrangements, and business recovery strategies. It will also examine the level of farmers’ adoption of agribusiness continuity planning practices and determine the major practices adopted by farmers to maintain business operations during periods of disruption. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agribusiness continuity planning. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who participate regularly in extension training are more likely to adopt agribusiness continuity planning practices. Extension training is expected to improve farmers’ awareness of potential business disruptions and strengthen their ability to prepare resources, maintain financial records, identify alternative sources of inputs and markets, and develop practical recovery measures. However, limited access to extension training, inadequate financial resources, poor business management knowledge, and limited access to relevant market information may constrain adoption. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, financial institutions, agribusiness organizations, and farmers’ associations by providing information on the role of extension training in strengthening the continuity of agricultural enterprises. The findings may also assist in developing extension programmes that equip farmers with practical business planning and risk preparedness skills. The study will conclude that effective extension training can contribute to improved adoption of agribusiness continuity planning among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension programmes on business continuity and risk preparedness, improving farmers’ access to relevant financial and market information, and providing practical training on contingency planning, resource management, recordkeeping, and business recovery strategies.
