Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Resource Recovery Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agricultural resource recovery practices, focusing on how training provided by agricultural extension personnel influences farmers’ use of methods that recover useful resources from agricultural residues and by-products. Agricultural resource recovery practices can help farmers reduce waste, conserve natural resources, improve soil fertility, lower production costs, and enhance the sustainability of farming activities. However, farmers’ adoption of these practices may depend on their access to relevant knowledge, practical training, and technical guidance. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine their level of adoption of agricultural resource recovery practices. It will examine training activities such as practical demonstrations, farm visits, group training, workshops, and advisory services. The study will also consider recovery practices such as composting of organic residues, use of crop residues as mulch, conversion of farm waste into useful soil amendments, reuse of animal waste, and other appropriate methods of recovering agricultural resources. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training and their adoption of agricultural resource recovery practices. Data collected will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be employed to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of resource recovery practices. The study is expected to find that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training demonstrate greater knowledge and adoption of agricultural resource recovery practices. Extension training may improve farmers’ understanding of the benefits, procedures, and appropriate applications of resource recovery techniques. Practical demonstrations may further enhance farmers’ confidence and ability to convert agricultural residues and by-products into useful resources. However, inadequate training opportunities, limited extension contact, lack of appropriate equipment, insufficient information, and resource constraints may limit adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, development agencies, and farmers’ organizations on the importance of extension training in promoting agricultural resource recovery. Strengthening practical training, demonstration activities, farm visits, and technical advisory services may encourage farmers to make better use of agricultural residues and by-products while reducing avoidable waste. The study will conclude that effective extension training can contribute to increased adoption of agricultural resource recovery practices by improving farmers’ knowledge, skills, and awareness. It will recommend regular and practical extension training, increased demonstration of locally suitable resource recovery techniques, improved access to relevant information and equipment, and stronger collaboration between extension personnel and farmers to promote sustainable agricultural resource management.
