Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Waste Collection Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agricultural waste collection practices, focusing on how training provided by agricultural extension personnel influences farmers’ management and collection of waste generated from farming activities. Proper agricultural waste collection is important for maintaining clean farm environments, reducing pollution, preventing the spread of pests and diseases, and creating opportunities for waste reuse, recycling, composting, and other forms of resource recovery. However, farmers’ adoption of appropriate waste collection practices may depend on their knowledge, skills, and access to relevant technical guidance. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine their level of adoption of agricultural waste collection practices. It will examine training activities such as farm visits, practical demonstrations, workshops, group meetings, and advisory services. The study will also assess farmers’ practices in collecting crop residues, animal waste, used containers, packaging materials, plastic materials, and other agricultural waste generated during farming activities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training and their adoption of agricultural waste collection practices. The data collected will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agricultural waste collection practices. The study is expected to find that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training demonstrate greater awareness and adoption of appropriate agricultural waste collection practices. Extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge of waste identification, collection methods, temporary storage, sorting, and safe handling. Practical demonstrations may further increase farmers’ confidence in applying appropriate collection methods and maintaining cleaner farm environments. However, inadequate training opportunities, limited extension contact, lack of collection equipment, insufficient storage facilities, and poor access to waste management information may constrain adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, environmental agencies, policymakers, development organizations, and farmers’ groups on the importance of extension training in promoting effective agricultural waste collection. Strengthening training programmes through practical demonstrations, regular farm visits, and accessible technical information may encourage farmers to adopt appropriate waste collection methods and improve overall farm waste management. The study will conclude that effective extension training can contribute to increased adoption of agricultural waste collection practices by improving farmers’ knowledge, skills, and awareness of proper waste management. It will recommend regular and practical extension training, improved access to appropriate waste collection and storage facilities, and stronger collaboration among extension personnel, farmers, and relevant environmental stakeholders to promote effective waste management and sustainable agricultural production.
