Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Community Seed Distribution Practices

Abstract

Community seed distribution practices involve the organized provision and sharing of quality planting materials among farmers within local communities. These practices can improve farmers’ access to suitable seeds, support the timely availability of planting materials, promote local crop diversity, and strengthen community-based seed systems. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills on seed distribution, handling, storage, quality maintenance, and record keeping, thereby supporting the effective adoption of community seed distribution practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of community seed distribution practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on community seed distribution, determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended distribution practices, and examine how training influences farmers’ participation in the handling, sharing, and distribution of planting materials within their communities. The study will focus on extension training, community seed distribution, seed handling, seed storage, seed quality maintenance, seed packaging, seed identification, distribution scheduling, record keeping, farmer participation, local seed varieties, and community seed management. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of practices relating to the selection of suitable planting materials, proper storage before distribution, equitable distribution, documentation of seed movement, and maintenance of seed quality during distribution. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires to assess their exposure to extension training and adoption of community seed distribution practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of community seed distribution practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of community seed distribution practices. Farmers who receive relevant training may demonstrate greater adoption of practices relating to seed handling, quality maintenance, packaging, storage, distribution scheduling, record keeping, and farmer-to-farmer seed sharing. The study may also identify specific areas of community seed distribution where farmers require additional training and technical support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, community seed organisations, seed producers, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for designing extension training programmes that strengthen community-based seed distribution systems. The findings may also assist farmers in improving access to quality planting materials, reducing seed shortages, maintaining local crop varieties, and strengthening community cooperation in seed management. The study concludes that extension training can provide farmers with important knowledge and practical skills for adopting effective community seed distribution practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on seed quality management, handling, storage, packaging, distribution, record keeping, and community seed coordination to improve farmers’ capacity to participate effectively in community seed distribution systems.
