Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Harvest Equipment Selection

Abstract

Harvest equipment selection is an important aspect of agricultural production and postharvest management because the choice of suitable equipment can influence harvesting efficiency, produce quality, labour requirements, and the level of losses incurred during harvesting operations. Appropriate selection of harvest equipment enables farmers to choose tools and machinery that are suitable for specific crops, farm conditions, and harvesting requirements. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and technical guidance needed to make informed decisions when selecting harvest equipment. The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of harvest equipment selection practices. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension training on harvest equipment selection, determine the extent of training received, examine farmers’ adoption of appropriate equipment selection practices, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption of recommended harvest equipment selection practices. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension training and the adoption of harvest equipment selection practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of harvest equipment selection practices. The study is expected to find that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of appropriate harvest equipment selection practices. Farmers who receive practical demonstrations, technical information, and regular training are expected to show greater ability to select equipment based on crop type, farm size, harvesting conditions, cost, durability, and operational suitability. However, high equipment costs, limited availability, inadequate technical knowledge, and insufficient access to training may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, equipment suppliers, and farmers’ organizations. Improved extension training may strengthen farmers’ knowledge of available harvesting equipment and enable them to make more appropriate equipment selection decisions, potentially improving harvesting efficiency, reducing produce damage, and minimizing avoidable postharvest losses. The study will conclude that effective extension training is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate harvest equipment selection practices. It will recommend regular practical training, field demonstrations, increased extension visits, improved access to technical information, and stronger linkages between farmers and agricultural equipment suppliers to support informed selection and use of suitable harvesting equipment.
