Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Maize Processing Techniques

Abstract

Maize is an important food and agricultural commodity that contributes to household food supply, livestock feed, income generation, and agro-processing activities. Appropriate processing techniques can improve the quality, safety, storage life, and market value of maize while reducing post-harvest losses. Improved maize processing may involve the use of appropriate equipment and methods for shelling, drying, cleaning, milling, grinding, storage, packaging, and preservation. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to adopt improved processing techniques and manage maize produce more effectively after harvest. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved maize processing techniques. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine how such training influences their knowledge and adoption of improved methods of processing maize. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply improved processing techniques and identify the major challenges affecting their adoption. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of improved maize shelling, cleaning, drying, milling, grinding, sorting, storage, packaging, and preservation techniques. It will examine the use of improved processing equipment, appropriate moisture control, hygienic processing practices, proper handling, pest prevention, and suitable storage methods. The study will also consider farmers’ access to extension training, participation in practical demonstrations, availability of processing equipment, processing costs, technical knowledge, access to credit, and availability of processing facilities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training, knowledge of improved maize processing techniques, and level of adoption. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of improved maize processing techniques. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of improved maize processing techniques. Extension training may improve farmers’ ability to apply appropriate processing methods, operate improved equipment, maintain hygienic conditions, control moisture, reduce contamination, and preserve maize quality. However, inadequate access to processing equipment, high equipment costs, limited finance, insufficient processing facilities, lack of technical support, and poor access to extension services may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to maize farmers, agricultural extension agents, agro-processors, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information on the contribution of extension training to improved maize processing and post-harvest management. Extension organisations may use the findings to strengthen practical training and demonstrations, while agricultural agencies and farmer organisations may use the information to improve farmers’ access to appropriate processing technologies and technical support. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to farmers’ adoption of improved maize processing techniques by providing practical knowledge, skills, demonstrations, and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes strengthen training on improved maize processing methods, equipment operation, hygiene, moisture management, storage, packaging, and quality preservation. Relevant stakeholders should also support farmers with affordable processing technologies, accessible processing facilities, technical assistance, and appropriate financial support to encourage wider adoption and reduce post-harvest losses.
