Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Millet Production Practices

Abstract

Millet is an important cereal crop that contributes to food security, household income, livestock feed, and rural livelihoods. Its ability to perform under relatively low rainfall and challenging production conditions makes it an important crop for many smallholder farmers. However, low productivity may result from inadequate use of improved production practices, limited technical knowledge, and restricted access to agricultural information. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to improve their production methods and adopt recommended millet production practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved millet production practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which they adopt recommended millet production practices. The study will also examine the relationship between participation in extension training and farmers’ adoption of improved millet production practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of improved millet varieties, quality seed selection and treatment, appropriate land preparation, timely planting, recommended spacing, fertilizer application, soil fertility management, moisture conservation, weed control, pest and disease management, harvesting, drying, threshing, and storage practices. It will also consider farmers’ participation in training programmes, field demonstrations, extension visits, practical farm activities, and access to technical information on improved millet production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from millet farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of improved production practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved millet production practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate greater adoption of improved millet production practices. Training, field demonstrations, and advisory support may improve farmers’ application of recommended methods of seed selection, planting, soil fertility management, moisture conservation, weed control, pest and disease management, harvesting, and storage. The study may also identify constraints such as inadequate extension contact, limited access to improved inputs, insufficient training opportunities, and financial limitations. The study will be useful to millet farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, research institutions, policymakers, farmer organisations, non-governmental organisations, input suppliers, and other stakeholders involved in cereal production. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in promoting farmers’ adoption of improved millet production practices. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing practical training and demonstration programmes that address farmers’ specific production needs. The study concludes that extension training is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of improved millet production practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and dissemination of relevant technical information on improved millet production. Farmers should also be supported with access to quality inputs and appropriate production technologies to encourage proper adoption, improve crop performance and yield, and enhance farm productivity.
