Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Livestock Housing Ventilation Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of livestock housing ventilation practices. Proper ventilation is an important component of livestock housing because it promotes adequate airflow, reduces excessive heat and moisture, supports air quality, and contributes to the health and comfort of animals. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills on appropriate ventilation practices for different livestock housing systems. Examining the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of livestock housing ventilation practices is therefore important for improving livestock management and welfare. The study will determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of livestock housing ventilation practices. It will specifically assess farmers’ participation in extension training and the extent to which they adopt practices such as providing adequate openings for airflow, maintaining appropriate ventilation spaces, positioning housing structures to encourage air movement, preventing excessive moisture accumulation, keeping ventilation openings unobstructed, maintaining clean housing environments, and adjusting ventilation practices according to prevailing weather conditions. The study will also examine the contribution of practical demonstrations and advisory support to farmers’ adoption of livestock housing ventilation practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise livestock farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training and their adoption of livestock housing ventilation practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of livestock housing ventilation practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training contributes positively to farmers’ adoption of appropriate livestock housing ventilation practices. Farmers who receive relevant training, demonstrations, and technical guidance are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of practices that improve airflow, reduce heat and moisture accumulation, and maintain suitable housing conditions. The study may also reveal variations in adoption based on farmers’ exposure to training, frequency of extension contact, livestock production systems, and availability of suitable housing facilities. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, livestock development agencies, veterinary and animal production institutions, policymakers, farmer organizations, and other stakeholders involved in livestock development. The findings are expected to demonstrate the importance of extension training in improving farmers’ understanding and application of appropriate ventilation practices. Such information can support the development of practical livestock management training programmes focused on housing design, ventilation maintenance, environmental management, and animal welfare. The study will conclude that extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for adopting appropriate livestock housing ventilation practices. It will recommend strengthening extension training on livestock housing management, increasing practical demonstrations and farm visits, improving farmers’ access to technical information on ventilation requirements, and promoting proper maintenance of livestock housing structures. Improved extension training is expected to contribute to healthier housing conditions and better livestock welfare and productivity.
