Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Market-Oriented Production Practices

Abstract

Market-oriented production involves planning and managing agricultural production according to consumer demand, market requirements, price conditions, product quality, and available market opportunities. It encourages farmers to consider market needs when selecting enterprises, production quantities, varieties, quality standards, and production schedules. Extension training can provide farmers with information and practical skills needed to understand market requirements and incorporate market considerations into their production decisions. Examining the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of market-oriented production practices is therefore important for strengthening the connection between agricultural production and market opportunities. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of market-oriented production practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine how such training influences their adoption of production practices based on market demand and requirements. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of market-oriented production and the extent to which market information is incorporated into decisions concerning farm production. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as selecting crops or livestock based on market demand, planning production quantities according to expected market opportunities, selecting market-preferred varieties, meeting quality and grading requirements, adjusting production schedules to market conditions, improving packaging, and maintaining production standards required by buyers. It will also consider farmers’ access to market information, extension training, buyer information, price information, production planning skills, and agricultural marketing networks. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training, knowledge of market-oriented production, and adoption of relevant production practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of market-oriented production practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive greater exposure to extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of market-oriented production practices. Extension training may improve farmers’ ability to use market information when selecting enterprises, planning production quantities, choosing market-preferred varieties, meeting quality requirements, and scheduling production activities. However, challenges such as inadequate market information, unstable prices, limited access to buyers, high production costs, insufficient extension contact, and poor access to production inputs may constrain the adoption of market-oriented practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmer organisations, agricultural marketers, agribusiness firms, government agencies, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information on the role of extension training in strengthening farmers’ ability to align production decisions with market requirements. Extension organisations may use the findings to develop market-oriented training programmes, while agricultural marketing agencies and farmer groups may use the information to improve market linkages and access to relevant production and price information. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to farmers’ adoption of market-oriented production practices by improving their knowledge of market requirements and strengthening their ability to incorporate market information into farm production decisions. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on market analysis, demand assessment, production planning, quality standards, product selection, and market information use. Relevant stakeholders should also strengthen farmers’ access to reliable market information, production inputs, buyer networks, and extension support to promote effective market-oriented agricultural production.
