Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Nursery Weed Management

Abstract

Nursery production is an important component of crop production because healthy seedlings provide the foundation for successful crop establishment and improved farm productivity. Weed infestation in nurseries can compete with seedlings for nutrients, water, light, and space, thereby affecting seedling growth and quality. Effective nursery weed management therefore requires farmers to have adequate knowledge and practical skills in identifying, preventing, and controlling weeds. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on appropriate nursery weed management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of nursery weed management practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of recommended nursery weed management techniques, and examine the extent to which training influences their adoption of appropriate weed control practices. It will also assess the frequency of training and the types of technical information provided to farmers on nursery weed management. The study will focus on extension training, nursery weed management, farmers’ knowledge, training participation, weed identification, nursery sanitation, manual weeding, mulching, appropriate spacing, cultural weed control, safe herbicide use, weed monitoring, seedling protection, and adoption of recommended nursery weed management practices. Information will be obtained from farmers involved in nursery production to determine their exposure to extension training and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their nursery activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of nursery weed management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended nursery weed management practices. Farmers who participate in practical training, demonstrations, and advisory sessions may demonstrate greater use of timely manual weeding, nursery sanitation, mulching, weed monitoring, and other appropriate weed control methods. The study may also indicate that regular training and follow-up support contribute to improved management of weeds and better protection of nursery seedlings. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, nursery operators, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving nursery management and seedling quality. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in identifying and controlling weeds in crop nurseries. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of nursery weed management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on nursery weed management. Extension programmes should emphasize timely weed identification and control, nursery sanitation, appropriate cultural practices, and safe use of suitable weed management methods to promote healthy seedling development.
