Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Plant Population Correction
Abstract
Plant population correction is an important crop management practice that helps farmers maintain an appropriate number and distribution of plants within a cultivated field. Proper plant population can support efficient use of available land, water, nutrients, and sunlight while promoting uniform crop growth and improved productivity. However, farmers may experience difficulties in identifying and correcting gaps, overcrowded stands, poor germination, and uneven plant establishment. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to identify plant population problems and apply appropriate correction measures. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of plant population correction practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of recommended plant population correction techniques, and examine the extent to which training influences their adoption of appropriate correction practices. It will also assess the frequency of training and the practical information provided to farmers on crop establishment and stand management. The study will focus on extension training, plant population correction, farmers’ knowledge, crop establishment, stand assessment, gap filling, thinning, replanting, seedling replacement, plant spacing, overcrowding management, field inspection, and adoption of recommended plant population practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension training and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in managing plant populations on their farms. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of plant population correction practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate plant population correction practices. Farmers who receive practical training and demonstrations may demonstrate greater ability to identify poor stands, correct planting gaps, remove excess plants, replace missing seedlings, and maintain recommended spacing. The study may also indicate that regular training and technical guidance contribute to better crop establishment and more effective stand management. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that address crop establishment and plant population management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical demonstrations that enable farmers to recognize plant population problems and apply suitable correction measures at the appropriate stages of crop development. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of plant population correction practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on crop establishment and stand management. Extension programmes should emphasize appropriate plant spacing, gap filling, thinning, replanting, and regular field assessment to support effective plant population management and improved crop productivity.
