Abstract
Produce harvest bins are important postharvest handling equipment used for collecting, containing, and transporting harvested agricultural products. The use of suitable harvest bins can help reduce bruising, crushing, contamination, and other forms of physical damage that may occur when produce is handled using inappropriate containers. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and technical skills on the selection, proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of produce harvest bins. The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce harvest bins. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension training on produce harvest bins, determine the extent of training received, examine the level of adoption and use of appropriate harvest bins, and identify the major factors influencing farmers’ adoption of produce harvest bins. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension training and the adoption of produce harvest bins. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce harvest bins. The study is expected to find that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of produce harvest bins. Farmers who receive practical demonstrations, technical guidance, and regular training are expected to demonstrate greater awareness and use of suitable harvest bins. However, high cost, limited availability, inadequate knowledge, transportation difficulties, and insufficient access to extension training may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and agricultural equipment suppliers. Improved extension training may strengthen farmers’ understanding of the benefits and appropriate use of harvest bins, contributing to better produce handling, reduced mechanical damage, improved produce quality, and lower postharvest losses. The study will conclude that effective extension training is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate produce harvest bins. It will recommend regular practical demonstrations, increased extension visits, farmer training programmes, improved access to suitable harvest bins, and continuous technical support to encourage proper use and maintenance of harvest bins among farmers.
