Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Recall Procedures

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce recall procedures. Produce recall procedures involve the identification, withdrawal, documentation, and management of agricultural produce that may have quality, safety, contamination, or other identified problems after distribution. Effective recall procedures can help farmers respond promptly to product-related problems, protect consumers, reduce potential losses, and strengthen accountability within agricultural value chains. Extension training can equip farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and apply appropriate produce recall procedures. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ exposure to extension training on produce recall procedures. It will specifically examine farmers’ knowledge of produce recall processes, their ability to identify and document affected produce, communication practices during recalls, and their level of adoption of appropriate recall procedures. The study will also identify the major challenges that may hinder farmers from effectively implementing produce recall procedures. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training, knowledge, and adoption of produce recall procedures. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce recall procedures. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive adequate extension training will demonstrate greater knowledge and adoption of produce recall procedures. Training is expected to improve farmers’ ability to identify affected produce, maintain relevant records, communicate with buyers, isolate or withdraw affected products, and document recall activities. However, inadequate training opportunities, poor record-keeping practices, limited technical knowledge, weak communication channels, and insufficient extension coverage may constrain effective adoption. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, and other stakeholders concerned with agricultural quality management and consumer protection. The study is expected to emphasize the importance of practical extension training in helping farmers understand procedures for responding to produce-related problems. Improved recall capacity may support better traceability, accountability, quality management, and risk reduction within agricultural production and marketing systems. The study will conclude that extension training can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of produce recall procedures. It will recommend regular extension training, practical demonstrations, simplified recall guidelines, improved record-keeping practices, and effective communication channels between farmers, buyers, and relevant agricultural stakeholders. Strengthening farmers’ capacity to implement produce recall procedures is expected to contribute to improved agricultural product management, traceability, accountability, and consumer protection.
