Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Awareness of Improved Planting Materials Produced through Biotechnology

Abstract

Improved planting materials produced through biotechnology are increasingly important in modern crop production because they can provide farmers with quality planting materials with desirable characteristics such as improved yield potential, disease resistance, uniformity, and adaptability. Biotechnology-based techniques can support the development and multiplication of planting materials that address important agricultural production challenges. However, farmers require adequate awareness and understanding of these materials before they can make informed decisions about their use. Extension training can serve as an important channel for providing farmers with relevant information about biotechnology-derived planting materials. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ awareness of improved planting materials produced through biotechnology. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine their level of awareness of biotechnology-produced planting materials, their characteristics, potential benefits, sources, and applications in crop production. It will also identify areas where farmers may require additional extension education to improve their understanding of biotechnology-based planting materials. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of biotechnology applications in crop production, types of improved planting materials, disease-resistant planting materials, tissue-cultured plants, improved seeds and seedlings, characteristics of biotechnology-produced materials, sources of planting materials, production benefits, and appropriate handling and establishment practices. It will also examine extension training activities such as workshops, farm demonstrations, field days, training sessions, farm visits, farmer meetings, and educational materials in improving farmers’ awareness of biotechnology-produced planting materials. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension training and awareness of improved planting materials produced through biotechnology. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between extension training exposure and farmers’ awareness levels. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive greater exposure to extension training may have higher levels of awareness of improved planting materials produced through biotechnology. Extension training is expected to improve farmers’ understanding of the characteristics, benefits, sources, and appropriate use of biotechnology-produced planting materials. However, limited access to extension services, inadequate training opportunities, lack of practical demonstrations, limited availability of biotechnology-produced planting materials, and insufficient agricultural information may reduce farmers’ awareness. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural biotechnologists, plant breeders, research institutions, seed producers, planting material suppliers, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote farmer awareness of biotechnology-based agricultural technologies. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical training materials and demonstration programmes that explain biotechnology-produced planting materials in a clear and accessible manner. The study concludes that extension training can play an important role in improving farmers’ awareness of improved planting materials produced through biotechnology. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training programmes through practical demonstrations, workshops, field days, farm visits, and accessible educational materials on biotechnology-derived planting materials. Farmers should also be provided with reliable information on the characteristics, benefits, sources, handling, and appropriate use of improved planting materials to support informed decision-making and improved crop production.
