Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Preparedness for Agricultural Emergencies

Abstract

Agricultural emergencies include unexpected events that can disrupt farming activities, damage agricultural resources, threaten livestock and crops, and cause economic losses to farmers. Such emergencies may arise from severe weather conditions, pest outbreaks, livestock health incidents, fire, equipment accidents, flooding, and other unforeseen situations. Farmers’ preparedness for agricultural emergencies is important for reducing potential losses, improving response capacity, and supporting the continuity of agricultural production. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for preparing for and responding to agricultural emergencies. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ preparedness for agricultural emergencies. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training on emergency preparedness and determine how such training influences their ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to agricultural emergencies. It will also examine the extent to which farmers apply knowledge acquired through extension training in developing appropriate preparedness measures. The study will focus on extension training, farmers’ emergency preparedness knowledge, emergency planning, risk identification, early warning information, emergency communication, farm safety procedures, emergency supplies, protection of farm assets, evacuation procedures, record keeping, and response planning. It will also consider farmers’ participation in practical demonstrations, emergency preparedness education, advisory visits, and other extension activities designed to improve their capacity to manage agricultural emergencies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and preparedness for agricultural emergencies. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ preparedness for agricultural emergencies. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ preparedness for agricultural emergencies. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate greater knowledge of emergency planning, risk identification, early warning systems, communication procedures, farm safety, protection of agricultural assets, and appropriate response measures. The study may also reveal that limited access to extension services, inadequate emergency information, lack of preparedness resources, and insufficient awareness of potential agricultural risks can constrain farmers’ ability to prepare effectively for emergencies. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, emergency management organizations, agricultural policymakers, rural development practitioners, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension training to improving farmers’ preparedness and response capacity during agricultural emergencies. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ ability to identify risks, prepare emergency plans, protect farm resources, and respond appropriately to unexpected agricultural events. The study concludes that extension training is an important component of improving farmers’ preparedness for agricultural emergencies because appropriate education can strengthen knowledge, planning skills, and emergency response capacity. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training, demonstrations, and advisory services on agricultural risk identification, early warning systems, emergency planning, farm safety, emergency communication, asset protection, and response procedures to improve farmers’ preparedness and promote resilient agricultural production.
