Effect of Extension Training on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Pasture Resting Practices

Abstract

Pasture management is an important component of livestock production because the availability and quality of forage directly influence livestock nutrition, productivity, and the sustainability of grazing resources. Pasture resting involves temporarily excluding livestock from grazing areas to allow vegetation to recover, regenerate, and maintain adequate forage cover. However, some livestock farmers may have limited knowledge of appropriate pasture resting practices and their importance for maintaining productive grazing areas. Extension training can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to adopt effective pasture resting practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on livestock farmers’ adoption of pasture resting practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, determine their knowledge of recommended pasture resting practices, and examine the extent to which training influences their adoption of appropriate pasture management techniques. It will also assess the frequency of training and the practical information provided to livestock farmers on pasture recovery and grazing management. The study will focus on extension training, pasture resting practices, livestock farmers’ knowledge, training participation, grazing management, pasture recovery, rotational grazing, grazing intervals, stocking management, forage regeneration, pasture utilization, vegetation protection, and adoption of recommended pasture management practices. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their exposure to extension training and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in managing grazing areas. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of pasture resting practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may improve livestock farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended pasture resting practices. Farmers who receive regular training, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate grazing intervals, rotational grazing, pasture recovery periods, and vegetation protection measures. The study may also indicate that practical training and follow-up extension support contribute to improved management of pasture resources. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, pastoral organizations, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving pasture management and sustainable livestock production. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes that address farmers’ challenges in managing grazing resources and maintaining pasture productivity. The study concludes that extension training is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving livestock farmers’ adoption of pasture resting practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farmer training, field demonstrations, grazing-management education, and follow-up advisory services for livestock producers. Extension programmes should emphasize appropriate resting periods, rotational grazing, stocking management, pasture recovery, and vegetation protection to support sustainable pasture management and improved livestock production.
