Effect of Participatory Extension Approaches on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Technologies

Abstract

Participatory extension approaches are important in agricultural development because they involve farmers directly in the identification, discussion, demonstration, and application of agricultural technologies. Active farmer participation can improve the relevance of extension activities and provide opportunities for farmers to share experiences, identify production challenges, and learn practical solutions. Improved agricultural technologies can contribute to increased productivity, efficient resource use, better farm management, and sustainable agricultural production when farmers have adequate knowledge and support to apply them. This study will examine the effect of participatory extension approaches on farmers’ adoption of improved technologies. The study will assess the extent to which farmers’ participation in extension activities influences their awareness, knowledge, and adoption of improved agricultural technologies. It will also examine the relationship between participatory extension activities and farmers’ application of recommended technologies in their farming operations. The study will focus on farmer participation in group discussions, field demonstrations, farmer field schools, participatory technology evaluation, community meetings, problem-solving activities, and farmer-led learning sessions. Improved technologies to be considered will include improved seed varieties, fertilizer management, pest and disease control techniques, irrigation methods, soil conservation practices, farm machinery, post-harvest technologies, and other relevant agricultural innovations. The study will assess farmers’ level of participation and their use of these technologies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on participation in extension activities, exposure to improved technologies, and adoption levels. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between participatory extension approaches and farmers’ adoption of improved technologies. The study is expected to reveal that participatory extension approaches have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of improved technologies. Farmers who actively participate in discussions, demonstrations, field schools, and technology evaluation activities may demonstrate greater understanding and increased use of recommended agricultural technologies. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate extension personnel, limited opportunities for farmer participation, insufficient technical resources, and restricted access to improved technologies and inputs. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist stakeholders in strengthening farmer-centred extension programmes and developing approaches that encourage active participation in agricultural technology dissemination. It may also provide useful information for improving communication, practical learning, and collaboration between farmers and extension service providers. The study concludes that participatory extension approaches can provide an important means of supporting farmers’ adoption of improved agricultural technologies. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer participation through group discussions, practical demonstrations, field schools, participatory technology evaluation, and farmer-led learning activities. Extension programmes should create opportunities for farmers to contribute their experiences and production needs while providing adequate technical guidance and access to relevant technologies to support improved agricultural production.
