Assessment of Air Movement in Naturally Ventilated Classrooms
Abstract
Natural ventilation is an important strategy for maintaining acceptable indoor environmental conditions in classrooms, particularly in warm climates where mechanical cooling may be costly or unreliable. Effective air movement can support thermal comfort, reduce indoor pollutants, control excessive humidity, and improve the learning environment. However, naturally ventilated classrooms may experience inadequate or uneven airflow due to poor building orientation, inappropriate window placement, obstructions, or unsuitable room configurations. Assessing air movement is therefore important for understanding the effectiveness of natural ventilation strategies in educational buildings. This study assesses air movement in naturally ventilated classrooms, focusing on the architectural and environmental factors that influence airflow patterns and indoor ventilation performance. The assessment considers classroom orientation, window size and position, door location, room dimensions, ceiling height, openings on opposing walls, and internal space arrangement. External conditions such as wind direction, wind speed, surrounding buildings, vegetation, and site configuration are also considered in determining their influence on airflow into and through classroom spaces. The study further examines the relationship between opening configuration and internal air movement. Cross-ventilation, single-sided ventilation, stack ventilation, and combinations of natural ventilation strategies are considered in evaluating airflow effectiveness. The positioning and size of windows and doors can determine the amount and distribution of air entering classrooms, while internal partitions, furniture, students, and other obstructions may alter airflow paths. These factors are examined to identify design conditions that promote more effective and evenly distributed air movement. In addition, the assessment considers the relationship between air movement and thermal comfort within classrooms. Appropriate air velocity can enhance occupants' perception of comfort by supporting evaporative and convective heat loss, particularly during warm periods. However, excessive or poorly directed airflow may cause discomfort for some occupants. The study therefore considers how airflow interacts with indoor temperature, humidity, occupancy density, classroom activities, and clothing conditions in influencing overall thermal comfort. The study recognizes that air movement in naturally ventilated classrooms varies according to seasonal weather conditions, building orientation, surrounding urban form, window operation, and occupant behaviour. Openings may also be obstructed, closed, or improperly operated, reducing the effectiveness of intended ventilation strategies. Maintenance of windows, doors, vents, and other openings is therefore important for sustaining adequate airflow. The assessment also considers the potential for combining passive ventilation strategies with ceiling fans or other low-energy systems where natural airflow alone is insufficient. The study aims to evaluate air movement conditions in naturally ventilated classrooms and identify architectural factors that influence effective indoor airflow. Its findings are expected to assist architects, engineers, school administrators, and educational facility managers in developing classroom designs that promote improved ventilation and thermal comfort. The study ultimately contributes to healthier, more comfortable, and energy-efficient learning environments through better integration of natural ventilation principles into classroom design.
