Assessment of Architectural Design Factors Affecting Workplace Satisfaction

Abstract

Workplace satisfaction is an important consideration in the design and management of contemporary office environments because employees spend substantial periods within workspaces. Architectural design can influence how employees experience their physical surroundings, affecting comfort, concentration, privacy, interaction, and overall satisfaction. Factors such as spatial organization, lighting, ventilation, acoustics, furniture arrangement, and access to outdoor views can contribute to the quality of the workplace environment. Assessing these factors is therefore important for creating workspaces that support employee wellbeing and effective work activities. This study assesses architectural design factors affecting workplace satisfaction in selected office environments. It focuses on physical and spatial characteristics, including office layout, workspace size, circulation, furniture arrangement, privacy, lighting, ventilation, thermal conditions, acoustic quality, colour, materials, and access to natural views. The study examines how these architectural characteristics influence employees' perceptions of comfort, functionality, privacy, interaction, and general satisfaction with their work environment. The research evaluates the relationship between spatial organization and workplace satisfaction. Open-plan layouts may encourage communication and collaboration but can also create concerns relating to noise, visual distractions, and privacy. Individual offices may provide greater privacy and concentration but may reduce opportunities for interaction. The study therefore considers how different spatial configurations, workstations, meeting areas, circulation routes, and shared facilities respond to the diverse activities and preferences of workplace users. Environmental conditions are also examined as important components of workplace satisfaction. Access to natural daylight, adequate ventilation, thermal comfort, appropriate artificial lighting, effective acoustic control, and views of outdoor environments can influence employees' perceptions of their surroundings. Poor environmental conditions may contribute to discomfort, distraction, and dissatisfaction, while appropriately designed spaces can support concentration and positive workplace experiences. The interaction between environmental quality and architectural design is therefore considered within the assessment. The study also recognizes that workplace satisfaction can be influenced by organizational and individual factors, including job responsibilities, workplace culture, occupancy patterns, work schedules, and personal preferences. Architectural design does not determine satisfaction independently, but it can create physical conditions that support or constrain employees' activities and experiences. Consideration of these interactions can provide a more comprehensive understanding of how workplace design contributes to satisfaction across different types of office environments. The study aims to assess the architectural design factors that influence workplace satisfaction and identify design characteristics that can support more comfortable, functional, and supportive work environments. The findings are expected to assist architects, workplace planners, facility managers, and organizations in making informed decisions regarding office design and improvement. The study may contribute to the development of workplace environments that balance productivity, comfort, privacy, collaboration, accessibility, and employee wellbeing through appropriate architectural planning.
