Assessment of Architectural Design Requirements for E-commerce Fulfilment Centres
Abstract
The rapid growth of e-commerce has increased the demand for specialized fulfilment centres capable of receiving, storing, processing, packing, and dispatching products efficiently. These facilities differ from conventional warehouses because their operations are strongly influenced by high order volumes, rapid inventory turnover, digital tracking systems, and time-sensitive delivery requirements. Architectural planning therefore plays an important role in supporting efficient logistics and minimizing operational delays. This study assesses the architectural design requirements for e-commerce fulfilment centres, with emphasis on spatial organization, workflow efficiency, accessibility, safety, and adaptability. The study examines the major functional spaces required for effective fulfilment-centre operations, including receiving docks, inspection areas, storage zones, picking areas, sorting spaces, packing stations, dispatch areas, returns processing spaces, administrative offices, staff facilities, and equipment areas. The relationships between these spaces are assessed to establish appropriate functional zoning and efficient movement of goods. Particular attention is given to the arrangement of receiving, storage, order-picking, packing, and dispatch functions to minimize unnecessary travel distances and support continuous operational flow. Circulation and material-handling requirements are also considered important aspects of architectural planning. Adequate provision should be made for forklifts, automated guided equipment, conveyor systems, delivery vehicles, staff, and pedestrians while minimizing conflicts between different movement patterns. Loading docks, service yards, vehicle circulation routes, and pedestrian entrances should be appropriately coordinated to improve safety and operational efficiency. Internal circulation should also accommodate varying order volumes and ensure that bottlenecks do not develop around critical processing areas. The study further considers the integration of technology and building infrastructure within e-commerce fulfilment centres. Automated storage and retrieval systems, conveyor networks, scanning technologies, robotics, digital inventory systems, and sorting equipment require appropriate spatial and service provisions. Adequate floor loading capacity, ceiling height, electrical supply, data infrastructure, ventilation, lighting, and equipment maintenance zones are therefore important architectural considerations. The design should also allow sufficient access for servicing and replacement of automated systems without significantly disrupting daily operations. Flexibility, worker wellbeing, safety, and environmental performance are additional requirements that influence fulfilment-centre design. E-commerce demand can fluctuate significantly, requiring spaces that can accommodate changes in inventory levels, order volumes, equipment, and operational processes. Adequate lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, ergonomic workstations, rest facilities, emergency exits, fire protection, and clear safety routes can support worker performance and reduce occupational risks. Energy-efficient lighting, natural ventilation where appropriate, renewable energy systems, rainwater management, and durable materials can further improve the environmental performance of large fulfilment facilities. The study aims to identify the key architectural requirements necessary for the effective planning and development of e-commerce fulfilment centres. The findings are expected to provide guidance on spatial organization, functional zoning, circulation, automation, infrastructure, flexibility, worker wellbeing, safety, and environmental sustainability. Integrating these requirements into architectural design can support faster order processing, efficient material movement, adaptable operations, and improved long-term performance of e-commerce fulfilment facilities.
