Assessment of Architectural Design Requirements for Performing Arts Centres
Abstract
Performing arts centres are specialized public buildings that accommodate diverse activities including theatre, music, dance, drama, cultural performances, rehearsals, and community events. Their architectural requirements differ from those of conventional public buildings because they must support performance quality, audience comfort, backstage operations, technical services, and efficient movement of users. Appropriate architectural planning is therefore essential to creating performing arts centres that are functional, accessible, acoustically effective, and capable of supporting a wide range of cultural activities. This study assesses the architectural design requirements for performing arts centres, with emphasis on the spatial, functional, environmental, and technical considerations that influence their performance. The assessment examines major spaces such as auditoria, stages, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, backstage areas, foyers, ticketing spaces, administrative offices, storage areas, technical rooms, and public amenities. It also considers the relationships between these spaces and how effective spatial organization can support efficient building operation. Particular attention is given to auditorium design and audience experience. Factors such as seating arrangement, sightlines, viewing angles, stage visibility, circulation, accessibility, acoustic conditions, lighting, and internal environmental quality are considered important requirements in performance spaces. The study also examines how the configuration and proportions of the auditorium can influence audience comfort, performer visibility, sound distribution, and the overall quality of performances. The research further considers the technical and operational requirements associated with performing arts facilities. Stage technology, theatrical lighting, sound systems, equipment storage, loading and unloading areas, performer circulation, and backstage access require careful integration within the architectural layout. Separate but interconnected circulation routes for audiences, performers, staff, and service activities can improve operational efficiency and reduce conflicts between different building users. Accessibility, safety, flexibility, and environmental performance are also examined as essential components of performing arts centre design. Accessible entrances, seating, toilets, circulation routes, emergency exits, fire safety provisions, and clear wayfinding are necessary to accommodate diverse users. Flexible spaces, effective natural or mechanical ventilation, appropriate lighting, energy-efficient systems, and suitable material selection can further improve the building's adaptability, sustainability, and long-term functionality. The study concludes that successful performing arts centre design requires an integrated approach that combines architectural, acoustic, technical, functional, safety, and user-oriented requirements. Careful coordination of performance spaces, public areas, backstage facilities, circulation systems, and support services can enhance both operational efficiency and user experience. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, cultural organizations, and developers involved in the planning and design of performing arts centres, particularly within contemporary urban environments.
