Assessment of Building Construction Practices and Material Waste
Abstract
Building construction generates significant quantities of material waste through activities such as material handling, cutting, storage, installation, demolition of defective work, and construction errors. Inefficient construction practices can increase material consumption, project costs, environmental impacts, and the volume of waste requiring disposal. Effective management of construction activities is therefore important for improving material efficiency and reducing unnecessary waste. Assessing the relationship between construction practices and material waste can provide useful information for improving resource utilization and overall project performance. This study assesses building construction practices and their influence on material waste generation, focusing on the methods and procedures used during building projects. The assessment considers material procurement, transportation, storage, handling, measurement, cutting, installation, sequencing, and disposal practices. Common construction materials such as cement, sand, aggregates, blocks, reinforcement steel, timber, roofing materials, tiles, and finishing products are examined to determine how construction activities contribute to material losses. The study further investigates the major causes of material waste during construction. Poor workmanship, inaccurate measurements, inappropriate cutting, over-ordering, inadequate storage, material damage, design changes, rework, poor supervision, and inefficient construction methods are considered as potential sources of waste. The influence of construction sequencing and coordination between different trades is also examined because poor coordination can result in material damage, unnecessary removal of completed work, and repeated construction activities. In addition, the assessment considers the role of construction management practices in controlling material waste. Effective procurement planning, accurate quantity estimation, inventory control, proper material storage, site supervision, worker training, quality control, and systematic waste segregation can contribute to improved material utilization. The study also examines the extent to which contractors and site personnel adopt waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery practices during construction activities. Material waste has implications beyond direct financial losses because it contributes to increased demand for raw materials, transportation requirements, energy consumption, and construction-site disposal. Excessive waste can also create site congestion, reduce productivity, increase health and safety risks, and extend project durations. Improving construction practices can therefore provide economic and environmental benefits by reducing material losses while supporting cleaner and more efficient construction processes. The study aims to assess existing building construction practices and identify the factors that contribute to material waste generation. Its findings are expected to assist contractors, architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, site managers, and other construction professionals in improving material management and waste reduction strategies. The study ultimately contributes to more efficient resource utilization, reduced construction costs, improved site management, and more sustainable building construction practices.
