Assessment of Building Response to Solar Movement on Urban Sites
Abstract
Solar movement is a significant environmental factor influencing the planning, orientation, form, and performance of buildings on urban sites. The changing position of the sun throughout the day and across different seasons affects solar radiation, shading, daylight availability, glare, and indoor thermal conditions. In densely developed urban environments, the relationship between buildings, streets, neighbouring structures, and open spaces further modifies solar exposure. Understanding building response to solar movement is therefore important for achieving comfortable, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsive urban architecture. This study assesses how buildings respond to solar movement on urban sites, focusing on the relationship between building orientation, massing, facade configuration, and changing patterns of solar exposure. It examines how buildings receive direct and reflected solar radiation at different times of the day and year. Attention is given to the influence of site layout, building height, spacing, orientation, and facade direction on the amount and duration of solar exposure experienced by buildings and surrounding spaces. The study further investigates architectural strategies for managing solar movement through building design. These include external shading devices, recessed openings, balconies, overhangs, screens, vegetation, courtyards, building setbacks, and appropriate window placement. The effectiveness of these strategies in controlling excessive solar heat gain while maintaining adequate daylight is considered. The study also examines how building form and facade articulation can be used to respond differently to solar exposure on various orientations. Urban context is considered an important factor affecting solar response. Adjacent buildings can create shadows, obstruct daylight, reflect solar radiation, or reduce opportunities for natural ventilation. Street orientation, urban density, site geometry, vegetation, and public open spaces can similarly influence the solar environment around buildings. The study therefore considers solar response as a relationship between individual building design and the wider urban setting rather than as an isolated building-level issue. Challenges may occur when efforts to reduce solar exposure conflict with other architectural and environmental objectives. Excessive shading can reduce useful daylight, while large glazed surfaces may increase heat gain and glare. High-density urban development can also limit opportunities for optimal building orientation and spacing. These conditions require careful coordination between building form, facade design, site planning, shading systems, material selection, and surrounding urban development to achieve an appropriate balance between solar control and environmental quality. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of how contemporary buildings can respond effectively to solar movement within urban sites. It is expected to identify design strategies that can improve solar control, daylight performance, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency while supporting appropriate urban development patterns. The findings can assist architects and urban designers in integrating solar-responsive principles into site planning and building design, particularly in warm urban environments where effective solar management is essential.
