Assessment of Construction Safety Practices on Building Sites
Abstract
Construction activities involve numerous hazards that can affect workers, site visitors, property, and the successful delivery of building projects. Accidents on construction sites may result from unsafe work practices, inadequate supervision, poor housekeeping, insufficient protective equipment, and failure to comply with established safety requirements. Effective construction safety practices are therefore essential for reducing occupational risks and creating safer working environments. Assessing existing safety practices on building sites can help identify deficiencies and improve the overall management of construction-related hazards. This study assesses construction safety practices on building sites, with emphasis on the measures adopted to prevent accidents and protect workers during construction activities. It examines practices such as the use of personal protective equipment, site induction, safety training, hazard identification, emergency preparedness, safe material handling, equipment management, scaffolding safety, housekeeping, and site access control. The study also considers the extent to which contractors and workers comply with established safety procedures and regulatory requirements. Effective construction safety management requires continuous identification and control of hazards throughout the project lifecycle. Regular site inspections and risk assessments can help identify unsafe conditions before they result in accidents. Proper use of personal protective equipment, appropriate signage, controlled access, safe storage of materials, and adequate supervision can further reduce exposure to construction hazards. The study therefore considers the relationship between systematic safety management and the prevention of accidents and injuries on building sites. The effectiveness of safety practices is also influenced by the attitudes and behaviour of construction workers and site management. Safety awareness, worker experience, training, communication, supervision, and management commitment can determine how consistently safety procedures are implemented. Contractors who establish clear responsibilities and encourage workers to report unsafe conditions can improve safety awareness and strengthen preventive measures. Effective communication between contractors, consultants, subcontractors, and workers is particularly important where multiple activities occur simultaneously. Despite the importance of construction safety, building sites may experience challenges such as inadequate safety training, limited availability of protective equipment, weak enforcement of regulations, poor supervision, pressure to meet project deadlines, and insufficient safety budgets. These conditions can increase workers' exposure to hazards and undermine established safety procedures. Improving construction safety therefore requires stronger management commitment, continuous training, regular inspections, effective enforcement, adequate protective equipment, and the development of a positive safety culture. The study concludes that effective construction safety practices are essential for protecting workers and supporting successful building project delivery. A comprehensive approach combining hazard identification, safety training, personal protective equipment, site supervision, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance can contribute to safer construction environments. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for contractors, construction professionals, regulatory authorities, and project managers seeking to strengthen safety practices and reduce accidents on building sites.
