Assessment of Outdoor Learning Spaces and Their Influence on Students' Learning Experience
Abstract
Outdoor learning spaces are increasingly recognized as important components of educational environments because they provide opportunities for students to learn beyond conventional indoor classrooms. Well-designed outdoor spaces can support experiential learning, social interaction, physical activity, observation, creativity, and engagement with the natural environment. The quality and configuration of these spaces can influence how students perceive and use their learning environments. Assessing outdoor learning spaces is therefore important for understanding their contribution to contemporary educational architecture and students' overall learning experience. This study assesses outdoor learning spaces and examines their influence on students' learning experiences. The research focuses on the physical, environmental, and spatial characteristics of outdoor educational environments, including gardens, courtyards, shaded areas, landscaped spaces, outdoor classrooms, recreational areas, and learning terraces. It considers how factors such as spatial organization, accessibility, seating, vegetation, shading, safety, and proximity to academic buildings influence students' use and perception of these spaces. The study investigates how outdoor learning environments can support different forms of educational activity. Flexible spaces can accommodate individual study, group discussions, practical demonstrations, collaborative projects, informal interaction, and experiential learning. Natural elements such as vegetation, trees, gardens, and water features may also provide opportunities for observation and environmental education. The arrangement of seating, pathways, activity areas, and open spaces can further influence movement, interaction, concentration, and the ability of students to engage with different learning activities. The research also considers the environmental quality of outdoor learning spaces. Adequate shade, thermal comfort, natural ventilation, daylight, acoustic conditions, and protection from excessive weather exposure can influence the usability of outdoor educational environments. Landscape design can provide shade and improve microclimatic conditions, while appropriate orientation and spatial enclosure can enhance comfort and reduce environmental distractions. Accessibility, security, maintenance, and universal design are also considered essential factors in ensuring that outdoor learning spaces are usable by diverse groups of students. The findings are expected to provide useful information for architects, educational planners, school administrators, and landscape designers seeking to improve learning environments through outdoor spaces. The study may identify design characteristics that encourage students' participation, social interaction, creativity, physical activity, and engagement with learning activities. It may also highlight challenges such as inadequate maintenance, limited space, poor accessibility, insufficient shading, safety concerns, and climatic conditions that can restrict the effective use of outdoor learning environments. Ultimately, the study aims to establish a clearer understanding of the relationship between outdoor learning spaces and students' learning experiences. By examining spatial organization, environmental comfort, landscape elements, flexibility, accessibility, and educational functionality, the research contributes to the development of more responsive and student-centred educational environments. The findings can support the integration of well-planned outdoor learning spaces into educational architecture and encourage a broader understanding of learning as an activity that can occur across both indoor and outdoor environments.
