Assessment of Outdoor Recreation Spaces in Public Facilities

Abstract

Outdoor recreation spaces are important components of public facilities because they provide opportunities for relaxation, physical activity, social interaction, and psychological restoration. Well-designed recreational spaces can improve the overall quality and functionality of public facilities by creating supportive outdoor environments for diverse users. However, many public facilities experience challenges such as inadequate recreational provisions, poor spatial organization, insufficient seating, limited shading, and inadequate maintenance. These conditions can reduce the attractiveness and usability of outdoor spaces. This study assesses the provision and quality of outdoor recreation spaces in selected public facilities, with emphasis on their spatial characteristics, accessibility, functionality, and user suitability. The study examines the availability, size, location, and organization of recreational areas within public facility environments. It also considers how these spaces relate to surrounding buildings, circulation routes, landscape elements, and other outdoor activities. The assessment is intended to identify the extent to which existing recreation spaces satisfy the needs of facility users. Particular attention is given to design features that influence the usability and comfort of outdoor recreation spaces. These include seating arrangements, pedestrian accessibility, shading, landscaping, lighting, surface conditions, recreational equipment, and opportunities for different forms of activity. The study also considers the flexibility of spaces to accommodate individual relaxation, group interaction, exercise, and informal recreation. These factors are examined in relation to the physical characteristics and operational requirements of different public facilities. The study further investigates user perceptions of safety, comfort, accessibility, attractiveness, and satisfaction with existing outdoor recreation spaces. Environmental conditions such as solar exposure, natural ventilation, drainage, noise, and thermal comfort are considered because they can significantly influence the duration and frequency of outdoor space use. The relationship between spatial quality and user behaviour is also explored to determine the features that encourage or discourage participation in outdoor recreational activities. Challenges affecting outdoor recreation spaces may include inadequate planning, limited land availability, poor maintenance, inappropriate landscaping, insufficient amenities, and competing demands for outdoor space. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated approach that combines functional planning, landscape design, accessibility, environmental responsiveness, and effective facility management. Improving these spaces can contribute to healthier, more inclusive, and socially engaging public environments. The study concludes that the quality of outdoor recreation spaces is closely associated with their accessibility, environmental comfort, spatial organization, amenities, and maintenance. It recommends that public facility planning should incorporate appropriately located, inclusive, flexible, and environmentally responsive recreational spaces. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, facility managers, and public-sector decision-makers in improving outdoor recreation provision and enhancing the overall quality of public facilities.
