Assessment of Outdoor Space Utilization in University Campuses
Abstract
Outdoor spaces are important components of university campuses because they provide settings for movement, relaxation, social interaction, informal learning, recreation, and academic activities. Well-designed campus outdoor spaces can contribute to student wellbeing, social engagement, and the overall quality of the university environment. However, some outdoor areas may be poorly planned, underused, inaccessible, or unsuitable for the activities of campus users. Assessing how outdoor spaces are utilized is therefore important for understanding their effectiveness and identifying opportunities for improvement. This study assesses outdoor space utilization in selected university campuses, with emphasis on the relationship between spatial characteristics and patterns of use. It examines different outdoor spaces, including courtyards, pedestrian areas, lawns, plazas, recreational spaces, shaded seating areas, gardens, and informal gathering spaces. The assessment considers the frequency, duration, and types of activities occurring within these spaces, as well as the characteristics that encourage or discourage their use by students, staff, and visitors. The research investigates how physical design factors influence outdoor space utilization. Factors such as seating provision, shade, vegetation, pathways, accessibility, spatial configuration, surface materials, lighting, landscape quality, and proximity to academic and residential buildings are considered. The arrangement and connectivity of outdoor spaces may influence whether users pass through, stay, interact, study, or participate in recreational activities. Understanding these relationships can help determine which spatial features contribute to active and meaningful campus environments. Environmental conditions are also considered because outdoor comfort can strongly influence the duration and frequency of space use. Solar exposure, temperature, wind movement, vegetation, shaded areas, and seasonal weather conditions can affect users' willingness to remain outdoors. The study therefore examines the role of landscape and environmental design in creating outdoor spaces that remain comfortable and functional under different conditions. Attention is also given to the availability of amenities that support prolonged use, including seating, waste bins, lighting, and pedestrian infrastructure. The effectiveness of campus outdoor spaces may also be influenced by users' demographic characteristics, academic schedules, security perceptions, maintenance conditions, and the location of different campus facilities. Spaces located near heavily used academic buildings may experience different patterns of activity from those located in isolated areas. Poor maintenance, inadequate lighting, insufficient seating, or limited accessibility may discourage use even where the basic spatial structure is appropriate. These factors highlight the importance of considering both physical design and operational conditions when assessing outdoor space utilization. The study aims to assess patterns of outdoor space utilization in university campuses and identify architectural and landscape factors that influence the effective use of campus outdoor environments. The findings are expected to assist university administrators, architects, landscape designers, and campus planners in improving existing outdoor spaces and planning new ones. The study may contribute to the development of inclusive, comfortable, accessible, and multifunctional campus environments that support learning, recreation, social interaction, and student wellbeing.
