Assessment of Public Spaces in Cultural Centres
Abstract
Public spaces are important components of cultural centres because they provide opportunities for social interaction, relaxation, informal gatherings, cultural activities, and community engagement. The quality and organization of these spaces can significantly influence how people access, use, and experience cultural facilities. Poorly planned public spaces may suffer from inadequate seating, limited shading, weak accessibility, insufficient landscaping, and poor connections with surrounding facilities. Assessing public spaces is therefore important for improving the functionality, attractiveness, and social value of cultural centres. This study assesses the quality and functionality of public spaces within selected cultural centres, focusing on their spatial organization, accessibility, environmental conditions, and patterns of use. The study examines plazas, courtyards, gardens, entrance forecourts, gathering areas, pedestrian zones, and other outdoor spaces associated with cultural facilities. It also considers the relationship between public spaces and major cultural functions such as galleries, theatres, exhibition halls, workshops, and educational areas. The assessment seeks to determine how effectively these spaces support diverse user activities. Particular attention is given to physical design features that influence the usability of public spaces. These include seating arrangements, pedestrian circulation, landscaping, shading, lighting, paving materials, visual connections, signage, and the provision of recreational or cultural amenities. The study examines how these features contribute to comfort, accessibility, safety, and opportunities for social interaction. The flexibility of public spaces to accommodate festivals, exhibitions, performances, informal gatherings, and everyday activities is also considered. The study further evaluates environmental and user-related factors affecting public space experience. Thermal comfort, natural ventilation, solar exposure, noise levels, drainage, cleanliness, and maintenance are examined because they can influence the duration and frequency of outdoor space use. The perceptions of different user groups regarding comfort, safety, attractiveness, accessibility, and satisfaction are also considered. These factors help establish the extent to which public spaces function as inclusive environments for cultural participation and community interaction. Challenges affecting public spaces in cultural centres may include inadequate planning, poor maintenance, limited amenities, insufficient environmental protection, weak pedestrian connections, and competition between public and service functions. These issues can reduce the attractiveness and usability of outdoor areas and limit their contribution to cultural activities. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated approach involving landscape design, architectural planning, accessibility, environmental responsiveness, security, and facility management. The study concludes that well-planned public spaces can significantly enhance the social, environmental, and functional performance of cultural centres. It recommends accessible circulation networks, comfortable seating areas, effective landscaping, adequate shading, appropriate lighting, flexible gathering spaces, and regular maintenance. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, landscape designers, planners, cultural organizations, and facility managers in developing public spaces that support cultural expression, community interaction, relaxation, and inclusive public engagement.
