Assessment of Service Areas in Public Transportation Buildings
Abstract
Service areas are essential components of public transportation buildings because they support the operational, administrative, maintenance, and logistical activities required for effective transport services. These areas may include staff facilities, maintenance spaces, storage rooms, utility areas, loading zones, waste management facilities, administrative offices, and service circulation routes. Inadequately planned service areas can interfere with passenger movement, create operational conflicts, and reduce the overall efficiency of transportation facilities. Assessing these spaces is therefore important for improving building functionality and service delivery. This study assesses the planning and functionality of service areas in selected public transportation buildings, with emphasis on their spatial organization, accessibility, capacity, and relationship with passenger and operational zones. The study examines the provision and arrangement of staff rooms, administrative offices, maintenance facilities, storage spaces, utility areas, service entrances, loading zones, and waste management areas. It also evaluates the connections between service spaces and major operational functions. The assessment seeks to determine how effectively existing service areas support daily transportation activities. Particular attention is given to the circulation and zoning of service areas within transportation buildings. The study examines staff movement, maintenance access, delivery routes, waste collection, equipment handling, and connections to passenger areas. The separation of public, staff, service, and restricted zones is considered to determine whether operational activities can occur without disrupting passenger movement. Appropriate service circulation can reduce congestion, improve safety, and facilitate efficient movement of personnel, equipment, and materials. The study further evaluates environmental and functional conditions within service areas. Factors such as ventilation, lighting, thermal comfort, sanitation, storage capacity, cleanliness, safety, and ease of maintenance are considered. The suitability of service areas for staff and operational personnel is also assessed, including the adequacy of welfare facilities and workspaces. Effective planning of these spaces can improve staff productivity and contribute to the reliability of transportation operations. Challenges affecting service areas may include inadequate space, poor zoning, limited maintenance facilities, insufficient storage, restricted service access, weak waste management provisions, and inappropriate relationships with passenger spaces. These deficiencies can lead to operational delays, safety concerns, maintenance difficulties, and reduced building performance. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated approach that considers operational processes, staff requirements, service logistics, accessibility, safety, environmental quality, and future changes in transportation demand. The study concludes that properly planned service areas are essential for the operational efficiency and functional performance of public transportation buildings. It recommends clear functional zoning, efficient service circulation, adequate staff facilities, strategically located maintenance and storage areas, appropriate service access, and effective waste management provisions. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, transportation planners, facility managers, and transport operators in developing service environments that support efficient, safe, and sustainable transportation operations.
